A Rose E'er Blooming

Jacqui SkempComment
I spent the morning with two beautiful baby boys. While they did join forces and alternate their nap times, I managed to get both of them down at the same time for about half an hour. Oh, who am I kidding? Babies nap when they want to. Most of the time anyway. I've been playing Sufjan Stevens Songs for Christmas on repeat. But mostly this song and I'm sure I'm driving Ian bananas.

There are obviously amazing versions sung by fantastic choirs, but there's something so intimate and vulnerable about Sufjans version. It's rather melancholic. And I like me some sad sounding songs, yo. I've played this album for a few years now, but this is the first time I've listened to the words of this particular song. I especially loved this line: It came a flowerth bright, amid the cold of winter. This year I was just struck by the beauty of a rose blooming in the middle of winter. Don't get me wrong, I love the California sun, but there's something really lovely about the sanctuary of a warm and life giving home in the dead of winter. Last year I was too busy complaining about being cold to even consider how amazing it was that I was walking around growing life while the world outside was dead and still.
